The spin options
As a leg-spin bowler myself I feel strongly that England need to look at a specialist spinner, someone who can bowl an opposition out. It looks like at the moment the ECB are sticking with the part-time spin of Joe Root and Moeen Ali. The boots of Graham Swann were always going to be hard to fill. It disappointing to see the lack of spin options coming through the county set-up. But let’s have a look which options England have.
Adil Rashid
|
Rashid was built up to be the next Shane Warne. At an early age the ECB were looking and working with Rashid. The attacking leg-spin bowler has been in and around the England squad; as well as being on lions tours. But it seems Rashid is a confidence player. Under Jason Gillespie at Yorkshire he has the backing to spin the ball as hard as he can to try and take wickets regardless of the runs he goes for. With a leg-spin bowler, you are always likely to go for runs. At 27 Rashid now understands his game and would be my first choice to get the call, however I find it silly how he recently toured the West Indies not playing a single game. Surely he would have been better getting overs under his belt playing for his county? |
James tredwell
|
The current ODI bowler has all the confidence and knows the England set up well, Tredwell does nothing special but will always do a job for you. Tredwell would be the safe selection for the ECB. Maybe I’ am being too harsh on Tredwell as whenever he has played for England he has done well. |
SCOTT BORTHWICK
|
Another leg-spin bowler, so I’m probably being biased. But I like Borthwick who plays in Division 1 with Durham. Borhtwick, like Rashid I feel have been treated harshly by England. They have never been given a long run with the side and as Shane Warne will tell you a leg-spinner needs the captains backing 100%. When watching Borthwick he has a bit of Steve Smith about him. An attacking batsman, athletic fielder but seems to neglect his bowling. |
Simon kerrigan
|
After his nightmare one test match in the Ashes at the Oval. If Peter Moores was still in a job then I think Kerrigan’s name would have been mentioned, this is after the pair had worked together at Lancashire. I still think he needs to take more wickets for Lancashire and get to know his game better. |
Monty panesar
|
Oh monty monty!! 50 test for Monty, but is he still in the frame? Despite his international experience, Panesar still needs to prove himself to the England selectors and with Essex in division 2 he will have to get shed loads of wickets to be considered. But as the ECB have shown with the KP situation they are now looking to the future and younger players. |
