Crossing over the boundary rope and crossing over the line as a Christian.
We play sport and Cricket because we love it, we love playing with our mates, scoring runs and winning. But as a Christian sometimes the only one in the team we can sometimes over cross the line maybe with sledging a batsman and taking it too far or possibly cheating by claiming the ball didn’t cross the boundary. There are so many temptations as a cricketer, but what does the bible say?
Colossians 3:23- Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. As much as cricket is a team game we ourselves always want to do well and feel like we’re contributing to a team. When we cross the boundary rope who are we playing for? Who are we representing? Are we a good witness for our teammates and are we glorifying God in our actions?
Philippians 2:3- Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. The picture of Freddie Flintoff with Brett Lee after the Ashes game are we humble and not doing things out of selfish ambition?
1 Corinthians 10:31- So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. A massive problem I faced when I started playing senior cricket was getting sucked into the drinking after the game. Having a few beers after the game is all part of cricket, but are we going overboard? Are we overstepping the line and making fools of ourselves? The last thing we want is our Christian mates thinking its ok to do stuff that we wouldn’t normally do if we were sober.
Romans 12:1- Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Be thankful that you are able to run about and play cricket, there is always someone much worse off even if we do get out first ball or drop a catch. How are you offering your bodies on the cricket pitch to honour God?
